Russia may have a shortage of a lot of things but they still have plenty of nuclear weapons. That's the game changer. The west is fighting a proxy war against a nuclear capable enemy; something they've never done before. The old saying of "don't poke the bear" comes into play. Look at the loses the Soviets suffered during WW2 before they finally got it right. The only thing the West could hope for would be a regime change in Russia that would end the war. Until then I wouldn't be antagonizing Russia too much. That's why the US isn't allowing offensive strikes into Russia using US weapons in my opinion. One thing this war in Ukraine does reveal is the false assessment of the Russian military after the fall of the Soviet Union.
