Colonel Robert Gould Shaw was only 25 When he took command of the 54th Massachusetts.
He would later die, and buried in a mass grave with his men after a failed assault. Intended to be an insult to the white officer that dared to lead blacks into combat.

After, when the government offered to burry Shaw in a personal grave, his family refused.

Roberts father said: "We would not have his body removed from where it lies surrounded by his brave and devoted soldiers. We can imagine no holier place than that in which he lies, among his brave comrades, nor wish for him better company. What a bodyguard he has!"
