Ahh yes the Russian winter so often the demise of many an army. So often history has repeated itself. A history lesson that wasn’t heeded and studied, with the French army under Napoleon and ze Germans under Von Paulus.
The same could be said for the Russians and the Americans and more so for the British with their time in the land of graveyards, the graveyard of empires. Afghanistan.🇦🇫

Before 300, before LOTR, before Braveheart, before Conan the Barbarian, before El Cid…this movie influenced them all, and shaped them all.

I am always reminded of Thulsa Doom when the Teutonic Knights in this film remove their helmets.

So relevant in helping us to understand the deep cultural trauma that still lives in the Russian soul: the horror of Invasion from the West.

At least it helps me to partly understand Patriarch Kiril's immoral, all-consuming support of the war on Ukraine, his serving, as Pope Francis has said, as "Putin's Puppet." History is stronger than any ethical claims, religious hatreds are thicker than blood.

The image of Prince Alexander Nevsky has not been preserved. When, during the Second World War, Stalin established the commander's order "Alexander Nevsky", he ordered to depict the artist Nikolai Cherkasov as the performer of the role of Prince Nevsky. Probably the only such case in history.
