This ad failed cos drugs is a generalistic term, what do you mean, asprin or poppers?
That River Phoenix one was way too soon, I get why it’s important but damn people were probably still grieving
Do you know who Jimi Hendrix was? Sure
Do you know who Janis Joplin was? Sure
Do you know who Jim Morrison was? Absolutely
Do you know who James Belushi was? Yeah
Do you know who River Phoenix was? Yeah
Do you know who Philip Joanou was? Probably not.
Use drugs. Be a legend.
Here's why this ad doesn't work as a cautionary warning:
Jimi Hendrix: Rock Legend
Janis Joplin: Rock Legend
Jim Morrison: Rock Legend
John Belushi: Comedy Legend
River Phoenix: Movie Legend
Some people are going to see this ad and think, "Well, they died legends, so who cares if drugs can kill you?" If you don't believe me, look at Chris Farley, who idolized Belushi so much that he died the same way Belushi did, and at the exact same age (33) over 3 years after this ad premiered.

This ad's thought process was in the right place. However, Jim Morrison didn't die of a drug overdose. It's suspected he died of heart failure brought on by years of drug/alcohol abuse. Some people might see this and think legends. I see this and think all of these people died way too young at the hands of drugs and alcohol, and what could have been.
