Im a USN veteran that didn’t like/enjoy the military for most of my active duty time. My advice for joining is to make sure you’re doing it because you want to serve your country, as corny as it sounds. If you’re doing it solely for benefits, GI Bill, money, learning a trade, etc. then you might end up hating every minute of it.
Now that I’m a bit older, matured, and have a family, my mindset has changed and wish I could go back to finish my 20 yrs. Due to the bureaucracy, it was difficult to get back in as prior enlisted. I tried for almost 3 years and couldn’t give any more

Going into the Navy changed my life for the better. My advice is to avoid red light districts and the USO, don't get married and save your money.

The big gain :

Dealing with VA for the rest of your life
Losing the prime years of your life
Making next to no money
Good luck maintaining any meaningful relationships.
The lack of personal freedoms
Sacrificing for people back home who couldn’t care less
The possible PTSD or injuries or death
Dealing with poor leadership
Getting to travel to all the places you never wanted to go 😂

I see a lot of young idiots in the service, but if you’re smart, four short years and set you up for life. There are a lot of resources available to you. For the people who complain about the service, they were just too dumb to figure it out.

And if you like it, make a career of it.

-1 Before joining the US military, remember that you won't be fighting for freedom, you will be fighting for Usurping that freedom from others.
