It starts with hard work when young. This leads to good education. This leads to good college. This leads to higher degree like a Masters. This leads to a good job. This leads to good income.

High income + education leads you to controlled spending and saving and importantly investing and managing your finances or using someone to do so.

Then by middle age you will have a good net worth (bank Accts, 401(k) maxing per year, portfolio investments, house with mortgage getting paid off etc.) and this can be in $millions range.

And penny wise and pound foolish.

When I talk about generational wealth, I talk about having income generating assets that I can pas on to my children that are set up in a way they continually grow with them.

On tax refunds, if the issue is you would have spent the money, that's a discipline issue, not a tax issue.
