Ex–Honor Guard Brought to Tears by Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Ethan Morse, who grew up on a farm in Potsdam, New York, had never seen the Tomb of the Unknown Solider before a friend invited him on a day trip to Arlington National Cemetery. That afternoon left a deep impression on him, and when he enlisted in the Army in the wake of 9/11, Morse knew he wanted to serve as a tomb guard. After training for one year, he was selected for sentry duty at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. To hear the rest of Morse’s story, please visit and watch “The Mistake That Haunts This Guard of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier” from the AARP original series “Reporting for Duty”.

Visitors to the tomb of the unknown soldier will maintain a level of silence and respect at all times. This is what the guard will announce if anyone is heard talking or making any noise
