Exploring the incredible transformation of the Persian Gulf from a collection of small fishing villages to the global epicenter of oil-fueled opulence. Cities like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Riyadh have risen from the sands with grand visions of becoming world-class business and tourist destinations. But is this meteoric rise sustainable, or just a facade built on dwindling oil reserves? We delve into the ambitious projects, the looming challenges, and the critical question of what happens when the oil runs out. Will these cities thrive in a post-oil world, or are they destined to become relics of a forgotten boom?

GCC non-carbohydrates economies are almost as artificial as their greenery

@Th3SilentObserver

Yes I say this with sadness, toxic alpha male culture and the stigmatization of (constructive) dissent in public discourse have economically done places like Dubai a disservice, places that would otherwise have indeed potential.

I do not believe the “post oil economy” will ever arrive in the ME. I think the oil there really is limitless.

@Stealth86651

They're just desperately trying to transition away from oil since they know eventually it won't hold the same value. Problem is the entire Saudi state doesn't offer anything other than oil, and building a populace for manufacturing or science takes a long time, not something you can just throw money at as they're used to.

@kingdom7777777

Arab countries are incapable of building anything other than idiot vanity projects.

The cheap south asian labour work force know full well what the work and living conditions are going to be like but they still go because its still better than being at home, no need to feel sorry for them. If the pay rates and conditions are improved then they will be priced out of the market and those mega projects will come to a screaming halt, ie the whole thing is built on cheap labour.
