In the 1860s, a Marwari merchant in Calcutta was taking his son. On the way, he stopped at a sweet shop to offer water to his son.

At that time there was a custom among the Bengalis to make someone a little sweet before giving him water. According to the custom, the shopkeeper gives the children and adults a spoonful of freshly made sweet rasgullas along with a glass of water.

The Marwari gentleman liked the sweet so much that he bought all the rosogollas in the shop and from him the word spread among the Bengalis and Marwari merchants of Calcutta. In a year, that sweetness merges with the Bengali.

The name of the Marwari merchant is Bhagwandas Bagla and the name of the Bengali merchant is Nabin Chandra Das alias Nabin Maira.

Many people say that what is the contribution of Marwaris to the land of Bengal. Contributions are many. I just heard a funny story today.

One more thing. If the Marwari merchant wanted, he could have bought the business of that Bengali merchant and made him an employee under him. But he didn't do that. Therefore, along with Nabin Moira, the name of Bhagwandas Bagla has been immortalized in the pages of history.

Another information is that the Marwari Charitable Hospital situated on the Mahatma Gandhi Road is also built by Bhagwandas Bagla for Rs. 4.5 lakh. In 1895, Rs. 4.5 lakh was a lot at that time.
