STARTING A BUSINESS AND BUILDING A BRAND
INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING

Taking on international customers is a big decision but opens up an exponentially unlimited market. The US market is 300 million people compared to the 7 billion possible customers globally. Compound these numbers with global e-commerce 2018 sales heading into 2.5 trillion, and a global e-business appears to be a gold-mine. But many considerations should take place before taking that dive into the international market. Investigate the international shipping situation (cost, speed, reliability) of the region(s) being targeted. Keep in mind that accurate tracking as well as successful delivery vary country to country. Here are what two recent studies reveal:

STUDY #1 | UNIVERSAL POSTAL UNION
The Universal Postal Union recently evaluated 170 countries’ postal services based on reliability, reach, relevance and resilience. The top scorer of three categories was Switzerland with China scoring top on the fourth category due to its ‘global connected-ness’. The United States was ranked above Canada and the industrialized country average.

STUDY #2 | OXFORD STRATEGIC CONSULTING REPORT
In a separate recent study, a British firm (Oxford Strategic Consulting) published a report ranking the postal services of the G-20 countries based on provision of access to vital services, operational resource efficiency, and performance and public trust. Interestingly, the United States ranked #1 in this study, delivering more letters and packages than any other country: 151 million addresses and 40% of the world’s mail volume. When researchers in a different study tested 159 countries’ post offices, the United States also came in first with how fast an average letter returned from a test address.

Japan Post ranked 2nd and scored highest in public trust. They are the world’s largest financial institution with assets of $3.3 trillion. Korea Post came in 3rd, with Australia Post ranked 4th with innovative ways to service remote regions while maintaining 290 million in profit. Canada Post ranked 5th with only 1,516 citizens per post office (highest in the world for access to postal services) compared to more than 24,000 in China. Last, German Deutsche Post ranked 6th with innovation such as E-Postbrief which allows customers to send e-mails that are delivered as physical mail.

CASE STUDY | Tiege Hanley
No perfect solution exists for international shipping, and Tiege Hanley is always trying to reduce the cost. For some countries, the cost will never go lower than $12 due to the inaccuracies of the delivery system. One of the biggest issues for some countries is that a large percentage of packages do not show up. When the package is returned, the costs are enormous including product cost AND shipping cost. Then, if reshipment happens, even more costs are incurred. The shipping is too unreliable, and a great deal of money is lost.

However, the likelihood of the package being delivered is statistically and significantly higher in the UK, Canada, and Australia. As a result, Tiege Hanley has lowered the UK shipping cost to $6. They are going to try to roll out this shipping cost in other countries as well. The Tiege Hanley appreciates your patience as there’s no perfect solution. Shipping is tough. The takeaway is that if you are selling physical goods, you need to understand international shipping.

I know you might be talking about India when it came to international shipping

@guyx1992

What countries, from your experience, are difficult to deal with in terms of their shipping service?
And also, I know that peteandpedro has a .co.uk site with a UK warehouse, how can you know if a company requires a secondary warehouse, in a different location ?

BTW, just switched to Tiege from Kiehls. Big difference, much more luxurious feel. Great work.

@LucidButler

Looking forward to testing the acne line. I am hoping I get chosen to do so as I enjoy the quality of tiege at their price point.

Aaron great video as always! Nice way to incorporate some new marketing strategy with celebrity endorsements. Always a joy to hear that shipping costs are being reduced 🙂 My business related question is this, what is the best marketing strategy to get more customer acquisition?
